释义 | Ratnagiri India ![]() The surrounding area is bordered on the east by the Sahyadri Hills of the Western Ghats (Ghats). The hills receive heavy annual rainfall, which runs off in rapid streams that have dissected the landscape, creating infertile plateaus separated by fertile alluvial valleys. The main crops are rice and coconuts; cultivation of various fruits and cashew nuts was developed in the 1970s. Fishing is predominant in coastal areas, particularly at Ratnagiri town, and forestry yields quality teak. Iron ore and bauxite are mined; iron is exported through the port of Reddi. The region has become dependent for its nonagricultural needs on Mumbai (Bombay) to the north, which attracts much of Ratnagiri's working population. Pop. (2001) town, 70,383. |
