Pedro Juan Caballero is the region's largest town and principal trade centre. The hinterland is utilized primarily for cattle ranching and coffee growing. The town has a radio station, a commerce school, a teachers college, and a school maintained by North American priests. The town is accessible by highway from Concepción and by the Brazilian railroad that terminates in Ponta Pora. Pop. (2002) urban area, 64,592.
