Also called Dzil Ligai (Apache: “Mountain of White Rock”), Baldy is located within a 7,000-acre (2,833 hectare) wilderness area; the summit and southern flank lie within the White Mountain Apache Reservation, and access by non-Apaches is prohibited. It is the second highest point in Arizona, exceeded only by Humphreys Peak (12,633 feet 【3,851 metres】) in the San Francisco Mountains. Nineteenth-century documents sometimes refer to the mountain as Mount Thomas.

At 2,730 feet (832 metres) above sea level, it is also the highest peak in the 350-mile- (560-km-) long Manitoba Escarpment.
