any of certain species of linden common to North America, especially Tilia americana, of the hibiscus, or mallow, family (Malvaceae), which is found in a vast area of eastern North America but centred in the Great Lakes region; and T. caroliniana and T. georgiana, which are found in the southeastern United States.
