The institute also includes the College of Imaging Arts and Sciences and the National Technical Institute for the Deaf. In addition to undergraduate studies, Rochester Institute offers a range of master's degree programs and a doctoral program in imaging science. Campus laboratory facilities include the Chester F. Carlson Center for Imaging Science and the Center for Microelectronics and Computer Engineering. Total enrollment is approximately 13,000. The Institute was founded in 1829 as the Rochester Athenaeum, with Nathaniel Rochester as its first president. The Mechanics Institute, which was founded in 1885 by Henry Lomb, merged with the Athenaeum in 1891. The resulting institution became, in 1944, the Rochester Institute of Technology. The institute emphasizes professional and technical training. |
