Jewish scholar who developed the yeshiva (a school of advanced Jewish learning) at Volozhin, in Russia, into a spiritual centre for Russian Jewry and thus helped keep alive the rationalist traditions of the great 18th-century Jewish scholar Elijah ben Solomon. He was one of the first rabbis to join the Zionist (Zionism) movement.
