释义 | Saint-Arnaud, Armand-Jacques Leroy de French military officer born Aug. 20, 1798, Paris, France died Sept. 29, 1854, at sea en route to France ![]() In March 1833 he became aide-de-camp to General Bugeaud de la Piconnerie. He later joined the Foreign Legion and went to Algiers (January 1837), where he rose rapidly in rank. In Paris at the outbreak of revolution in 1848, Saint-Arnaud tried vainly to save the monarchy. He returned to Algeria in 1851 as a major general, was appointed commander of the province of Constantine, and, in autumn 1851, became minister of war. He then played a decisive part in the coup d'état of Dec. 2, 1851. Napoleon III rewarded him by creating him a senator and a marshal of France. In 1854 he resigned his ministerial post and, although seriously ill, accepted command of the French forces in the Crimea. Saint-Arnaud planned the landing at Evpatoria (September 14); and, with the assistance of the British forces under Lord Raglan, he won the Battle of Alma (September 20). |
