city, Oakland county, southeastern Michigan, U.S. It lies just southeast of Pontiac and northwest of Detroit. The site was settled in 1819 by Amasa Bagley and was known as Bagley's Corners and Bloomfield Center until the present name was adopted in the 1890s. A farming community until Detroit residents began buying estates there, it then became a restricted residential community. The Cranbrook Foundation was established in 1927 by Ellen Scripps Booth and George G. Booth (president of the Detroit News) on their 300-acre (121-hectare) estate. Now known as Cranbrook Educational Community, it includes the Cranbrook Academy of Art, the Cranbrook Art Museum, the Cranbrook Institute of Science, the Cranbrook House and Gardens, the Gothic-style Christ Church (Episcopalian), and the Cranbrook Schools, a group of private coeducational institutions for students from the preschool through the college preparatory level. The Detroit Temple (1999) of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints ( Mormon) is located in the city, as is the church's local stake centre (or tabernacle; 1959).
