Founded by African immigrants in the early 19th century and destroyed by fire twice in the early 1900s, the town was once a thriving banana port but now exports primarily cacao, coconuts, and plantains. It is also an important regional commercial centre and is served by domestic airlines. Pop. (2000) 3,139.
