town, western Panama, at the southern tip of Colón Island in Almirante Bay. Founded by African immigrants in the early 19th century and destroyed by fire twice in the early 1900s, the town was once a thriving banana port but now exports primarily cacao, coconuts, and plantains. It is also an important regional commercial centre and is served by domestic airlines. Pop. (2000) 3,139.
