He was a deacon of the Roman Church when Pope St. Gregory I the Great sent him in 603 as a legate to Constantinople, where he obtained from the Byzantine emperor Phocas an edict recognizing the see of Rome as the head of all the churches. As pope he convoked a synod to regulate papal elections.
