It is also a commercial and manufacturing centre for the surrounding agricultural lands, which produce tobacco, sugarcane, and pineapples. Cigars, clothes, and yeast are manufactured, and a sugar refinery is located nearby. Havana, 20 mi (32 km) to the northeast, can be reached by railroad and highway. The city has a military airport.
