private, coeducational institution of higher learning in Brunswick, Maine, U.S. Bowdoin is an undergraduate college with a traditional liberal arts curriculum. The college cosponsors study-abroad programs in Rome, Stockholm, Sri Lanka, and southern India. Important academic facilities include Peary-MacMillan Arctic Museum, Bethel Point Marine Research Station, Hawthorne-Longfellow Library, and the Bowdoin Scientific Station on Kent Island in the Bay of Fundy (Fundy, Bay of). Total enrollment is approximately 1,500.
Maine's oldest college, Bowdoin was chartered in 1794, and instruction began in 1802. The school was named for James Bowdoin (Bowdoin, James), a statesman and first president of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and received much of its initial endowment from his son. Women were admitted in 1971. The campus features several historic buildings, including the Walker Art Building, designed by McKim, Mead & White and built in 1894. Noteworthy alumni include U.S. President Franklin Pierce (Pierce, Franklin), novelist Nathaniel Hawthorne (Hawthorne, Nathaniel), poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow (Longfellow, Henry Wadsworth), U.S. Speaker of the House Thomas Brackett Reed (Reed, Thomas B), and Arctic explorers Robert E. Peary (Peary, Robert Edwin) and Donald B. MacMillan.
