The town was destroyed (1404–06) during battles between the Pisans and the Florentines. It was visited in 1820 by the English poet Percy Bysshe Shelley, who is commemorated in a local plaque and bust. Local products include cotton goods and lamps. Pop. (2006 est.) mun., 30,891.
