segment of the Pacific Coast Ranges in southern California, U.S. The mountains extend south-southeastward for about 30 miles (50 km) from San Gorgonio Pass to the northern end of the Santa Rosa Mountains. San Jacinto Peak (10,804 feet 【3,293 m】) is the highest point; the city of Palm Springs lies at its eastern base. The range is largely within conservation areas, including the Mount San Jacinto State Park and a division of the San Bernardino National Forest. The mountains attract tourists, provide outdoor recreation, and serve as an important watershed for the surrounding area.
