词条 Browne, E Martin
释义
Browne, E Martin
British director and producer
born Jan. 29, 1900, Zeals, Wiltshire, Eng.
died April 27, 1980, London
British theatrical director and producer who was a major influence on poetic and religious drama and, for more than 25 years, the director chosen by T.S. Eliot for his plays. It was as director of the religious spectacle called The Rock that Browne proposed Eliot as author and helped the poet to make his debut as a dramatist. This led to Eliot's Murder in the Cathedral (1935), directed by Browne for the Canterbury Festival, and to Eliot's four modern poetic dramas, in the writing of which he worked in consultation with his director.
During World War II Browne formed the Pilgrim Players and in the postwar years helped to encourage the revival of poetic drama, producing work by such new writers as Christopher Fry at the Mercury Theatre, London. He was for 10 years director of the British Drama League and involved in productions of Shakespeare as well as revivals of medieval mystery plays. He lectured extensively on religious drama in the United States, where, as a young man, he had worked as a professional actor.
