The borough covers the heavily industrialized western suburbs of the East Midlands city of Nottingham and the valley of the River Trent; its northern end includes part of the Nottinghamshire coalfield. The administrative centre is Beeston, southwest of Nottingham. Area 31 square miles (81 square km). Pop. (2001) 107,572.
