Its climate is considerably cooler than that of most of the other communities of the Berar region. Primarily a regional administrative centre with little industry, it has several colleges affiliated with the University of Nagpur. The surrounding area is essentially agricultural (cotton, wheat, and peanuts 【groundnuts】). Pop. (2001) 62,972.
