any of some 240 to 270 species of flowering plants native from Mexico to South America and named for their flowers' pouchlike shape. They belong to the genus
Calceolaria and the family Calceolariaceae. Many large-flowered and showy varieties of slipper flower exist in the florist trade. The flowers are usually yellow or purple with contrasting spots.
