The river flows generally south through Cle Elum Lake, thence southeast past Cle Elum, joining the Yakima River of the Columbia River system after a course of about 28 miles (45 km). The fast-flowing river is a favourite destination for white-water rafting and kayaking; its name derives from the Yakima Indian phrase tie-el-lum, meaning “swift waters.” Cle Elum Lake, impounded by Cle Elum Dam (1933) at the south end of the lake, is 8 miles (13 km) long.
