American anthropologist who made notable contributions to cultural and physical anthropology and archaeology. His areas of study ranged from prehistoric agrarian communities to contemporary tribal societies in the Middle East, Patagonia, and the hill country of India.
Coon taught at Harvard from 1927 to 1948, earning his Ph.D. there in 1928. During World War II he served with the Office of Strategic Services in Africa. In 1948 he joined the faculty of the University of Pennsylvania and became curator of ethnology at the University Museum, Philadelphia, serving in the two positions until 1963. He is perhaps best remembered for his general works The Story of Man (1954) and The Seven Caves (1957), a history of archaeology in the Middle East. His other books include Caravan (1951), The Origin of Races (1962), and The Hunting Peoples (1971).
