island, eastern Marguerite Bay, west of Palmer Peninsula, Antarctica. The island, about 2,500 feet (760 m) long and 1,000 feet (300 m) wide, was named for Stonington, Conn., the home port of the sloop Hero, from which Nathaniel Palmer saw Antarctica in 1820. It was the East Base, for aerial reconnaissance, of the U.S. Antarctic service commanded by Richard E. Byrd in the late 1930s.
