词条 | Cévennes |
释义 | Cévennes mountain range, France mountain range of southern France containing peaks over 5,000 feet (1,525 m) and forming the southeastern rim of the Massif Central, overlooking the lower valley of the Rhône River and the plain of Languedoc. A part of the Atlantic-Mediterranean watershed, its Mediterranean slope is riven by valleys gashed by torrents that eventually become rivers—e.g., the Hérault, Gard, Cèze, and Ardèche. In the valleys grapes, olives, and other fruits are grown. Although mulberries for the nourishment of silkworms are no longer cultivated, there are still some textile mills. Heavy industries are centred on the small Alès coalfield, although it is in decline. The name Cévennes signifies wooded slopes, but they have been largely denuded; a state reforestation program is under way. The range is also the site of the Cévennes National Park. |
