series of tornados that caused severe damage to the midwest and east United States and Ontario, Can., on April 3–4, 1974. The largest outbreak of tornados ever recorded, it consisted of 144 tornados and resulted in more than $1 billion in damage and 330 deaths. The U.S. states affected were Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Ohio, Kentucky, Tennessee, Alabama, Mississippi, Georgia, North Carolina, Virginia, West Virginia, and New York.
