It is 55 miles (89 km) west of Rouen by road and 128 miles (206 km) from Paris. The town was founded by the duc de Morny in 1860. Although first developed as a seaside resort, the renown of Deauville also owes much to its horse-racing tracks and related activities. The town is home to a casino, a marina, and a major conference centre, designed in part to diversify the tourism economy. Deauville is readily accessible by road, rail, and air. Pop.
