Founded in 1879 during a gold rush, the town derives its name from a Celtic term meaning “an eminence commanding a wide view.” Proclaimed a municipality in 1891, it is now a major rail junction and a storage and shipment centre for wheat grown in the Riverina. The town also handles fat lambs and cattle, has meat-freezing plants and flour mills, and manufactures clothing, plaster, and bricks.
