词条 | Euthydemus |
释义 | Euthydemus king of Bactria also spelled Euthydemos flourished 3rd century BC king of Bactria. At first he was probably a satrap (governor) of the Bactrian king Diodotus II, whom he later killed and whose throne he usurped. In 208 he was attacked by the Seleucid king Antiochus III, and a long war was fought between them. Euthydemus, having failed in his attempt to defend the line of the Arius (Harīrūd) River, fell back to his capital, Bactra (probably Balkh in northern Afghanistan), where he withstood a two-year siege. Finally a peace was concluded by which Euthydemus kept his kingdom while acknowledging Seleucid overlordship. Later, Euthydemus took territory from Parthia. According to some scholars, he also occupied the eastern provinces of Sogdiana, Arachosia, Drangiana, and Aria. |
