city, eastern Karnataka (Karnātaka) state, southern India. Tumkur lies at the foot of Devarayadurga Hill, which has a picturesque health resort at about 3,900 feet (1,190 metres). The city, a road and rail centre, has a cluster of small-scale industries, which include a tool factory, soap works, and rice and oil mills. The chief crops grown in the surrounding area are millet, rice, and oilseeds. In the early 21st century, Tumkur became a satellite of Bangalore (Bengaluru). Pop. (2001) 248,929.
