Surveyed by 1855 and named after Ulverston, Eng., in the English Lake District, it was the centre of a municipality (after 1993 within Central Coast) from 1907. Ulverstone is the centre of an agricultural, pastoral, and lumbering region and also serves as a resort and retirement town and as a residential area for Burnie (west) and Devonport (east). Located on a rail line and the Bass Highway to Launceston, 55 miles (90 km) southeast, Ulverstone has some manufacturing and craft industries. Pop. (2001) urban centre, 9,499.
