English statesman, a prominent royal adviser who played an equivocal role in the events leading to the outbreak of the Civil War between King Charles I and Parliament.

After serving in five Parliaments, he was appointed secretary of state by Charles I in February 1640. Three months later Vane announced to the House of Commons that Charles I would waive collection of the unpopular royal levy known as ship money if Parliament would supply the crown with 12 military subsidies. By refusing to accept fewer than 12 subsidies, Vane created a deadlock that led to the dissolution of the Short Parliament by Charles. Vane may have been trying to block a reconciliation between Charles and Parliament, perhaps because he was secretly working against the King.

In 1641 Vane helped bring about the impeachment and execution of the King's chief minister, Thomas Wentworth, the earl of Strafford (Strafford, Thomas Wentworth, 1st earl of, Baron Of Raby), by testifying that Strafford had proposed using Irish troops to suppress Charles's Parliamentary opponents. As a result, Charles dismissed Vane from office. He worked for the Parliamentary cause during the Civil War but was not placed on the Council of State in 1650 because of opposition from leading radicals. In 1654 he served in Oliver Cromwell's first Parliament.
