词条 | Vanimo |
释义 | Vanimo Papua New Guinea port, island of New Guinea, northwestern Papua New Guinea, southwestern Pacific Ocean. Located on a peninsula surrounded by a white sand beach fronting the Pacific Ocean, Vanimo is about 20 miles (32 km) east of the border with the Indonesian (western) half of New Guinea. Lying on a well-drained alluvial plain covered with lowland rainforest, the town is a lumbering centre with sawmills and a port for overseas shipment of timber. Some copra is produced along the coast. In the late 1990s an industrial and commercial free-trade zone exempt from import and export duties was established at Vanimo. By the early 21st century, the zone had attracted the interest of foreign investors, and improvements to the port area's infrastructure were planned. Highways run west to Wutung on the Indonesian border and south to Bewani, and an unimproved coastal road connects to Aitape in the east. Air, bus, and ferry services link Vanimo with Jayapura, Indon. Pop. (2000) 9,809. |
