author and lexicographer who was a leading figure in 19th-century Turkish literature.

Born into an established Albanian Muslim family, Frseri was educated at the Greek school of Janina and was also given lessons in Turkish, Persian, and Arabic by private tutors. After moving to Istanbul, he began a career in journalism and founded the newspaper Sabah (“Morning”) in 1875. He also became associated with the new Turkish writers. He translated works from French and wrote several novels and plays, notably Taaşuk-i talât ve fitnet (1872), a novel that condemns Turkish marriage customs; and three plays, Besa, Sidi Yahya, and Kave. The last play, which was considered too outspoken, led to a two-year exile in North Africa.

On his return, Frseri began working on what are considered his greatest contributions, his lexicographical works Kamus-i Fransevi, a French-Turkish, Turkish-French dictionary; Kamus-i alam (“Universal Dictionary”), an encyclopaedic work in six volumes; and Kamus-i Türki (“Turkish Dictionary”), in two volumes. The last work is particularly interesting as an attempt to purify the Turkish language of its Arabic and Persian accretions. Many other scholarly projects were left unfinished at his death.
