释义
Gallagher, Tess
American poet
née Tess Bond
born July 21, 1943, Port Angeles, Wash., U.S.
American poet, author of naturalistic, introspective verse about self-discovery, womanhood, and family life.
Gallagher studied under Theodore Roethke at the University of Washington (B.A., 1968; M.A., 1970) before attending the University of Iowa Writers' Workshop (M.F.A., 1974). Her first full-length volume of verse, Instructions to the Double (1976), is a confessional work about synthesizing her past life with her future career as a poet.
In 1978 Gallagher published Portable Kisses, On Your Own, and Under Stars; the last volume contains a section based on her 1976 trip to Ireland. Several poems in Willingly (1984) eulogize her late father, and the collections Amplitude (1987) and Moon Crossing Bridge (1992) examine her relationship with her third husband, author Raymond Carver (Carver, Raymond). Her other volumes of verse include Stepping Outside (1974) and The Valentine Elegies (1993). In addition, she wrote two books of short fiction, The Lover of Horses and Other Stories (1989) and At the Owl Woman Saloon (1997), as well as plays for film and television.
