释义 | Walpole Island island, New Caledonia small, uninhabited coralline limestone island in the French overseas country of New Caledonia, southwestern Pacific Ocean, at the southern tip of the Loyalty Islands. It has an area of 310 acres (125 hectares) and rises to a level surface of about 230 feet (70 metres) above sea level. Evidence of prehistoric human habitation dating to as early as 800 BC has been found on the island. It was first charted (1794) by Capt. T. Butler of the ship Walpole. The island was worked for guano until the early 1940s. |
