释义 | Goldsmid, Sir Isaac Lyon, 1st Baronet British political activist born Jan. 13, 1778, London died April 27, 1859, London financier, Britain's first Jewish baronet, whose work for Jewish emancipation in that nation made possible the passage of the Jewish Disabilities Bill of 1859, granting basic civil and political rights to Jews. Highly successful as a dealer in precious metals with Portugal, Brazil, and Turkey, Goldsmid became active in the cause of Jewish emancipation and social reform. After passage of the Act of 1829, providing civil rights for Roman Catholics in England, he sought and made possible the passage of a similar measure for Jews. Goldsmid also worked for reform of the penal system and was one of the founders of University College, London, in 1826. In 1841 he was made the first Jewish baronet. His son, Sir Francis Henry Goldsmid (1808–78), worked with him for Jewish emancipation and was the first Jewish barrister in England. |
