strait in the West Indies, connecting the Atlantic Ocean with the Caribbean Sea. It is 50 miles (80 km) wide and separates Cuba (west) from Hispaniola (southeast). It has a threshold depth of 5,500 feet (1,700 m) and is on the direct shipping route between the east coast of the United States and the Panama Canal. The Jamaica Channel, between Jamaica (west) and Hispaniola (east), forms a southwest extension of the Windward Passage.
