词条 Wouri River
释义
Wouri River
river, Cameroon
Wouri also spelled Vouri or Vuri
stream in southwestern Cameroon whose estuary on the Atlantic Ocean is the site of Douala, the country's major industrial centre and port. Two headstreams—the Nkam and the Makombé—join to form the Wouri, 20 miles (32 km) northeast of Yabassi. The river then flows in a southwesterly direction for about 100 miles (160 km) to empty into the Gulf of Guinea (Guinea, Gulf of). It is navigable for 40 miles (64 km) along its lower course, below Yabassi.
The Portuguese navigator Fernão do Po was probably the first European to reach the estuary of the river, which he named Rio dos Camarões (“River of the Prawns 【Shrimps】”) because of its abundance of crustaceans. The Spanish form of the word, camarones, prevailed and later gave rise to the better-known Indo-European variants of the country's name, German Kamerun, English Cameroon, and French Cameroun.
