An accomplished singer and pianist as well as a theatre composer and conductor, he produced operettas and operas at Drury Lane Theatre and Covent Garden and was musical director at the Princess's Theatre. Of his many tuneful songs, “Simon the Cellarer” and “To Anthea” were especially popular.
