释义
Holroyd, Michael
British author and editor
in full Michael De Courcy Fraser Holroyd
born Aug. 27, 1935, London, Eng.
British author and editor whose full-scale critical biographies of Lytton Strachey, Augustus John, and George Bernard Shaw are considered superb examples of the genre.
After graduating from Eton College, Holroyd worked at a law firm for two years before joining the army. He left the army in 1958 and from then on concentrated on writing. A novelist (A Dog's Life, 1969), essayist (Unreceived Opinions, 1973), and editor, Holroyd is best known for his meticulous, scholarly biographies of three of Britain's outstanding literary and artistic figures. His exhaustive two-volume work Lytton Strachey: A Critical Biography (1967, 1968; rev. ed., 1973) stands as Strachey's definitive biography. Holroyd's two-volume Augustus John (1974, 1975; rev. ed., 1976) is a study of the painter's personal as well as artistic life. The four-volume biography of Shaw, Bernard Shaw (1988, 1989, 1991, 1992), took Holroyd 15 years to research. He was commended by critics as being judicious, scholarly, and knowledgeable. In 1982 he married the author Margaret Drabble.
