It is connected with P'yŏngyang by rail line and road. Kanggye's industries include timber processing and ceramics. Manufacturing has been carried on since 1945, when a hydroelectric-power plant at the Tongno River, a tributary of the Yalu (Amnok) River, was built near the city. Mining industries in the vicinity include copper, zinc, coal, and graphite. The city has a college of education. Pop. (1987 est.) 211,000.
