词条 Karonga
释义
Karonga
Malawi
town, northern Malawi (Malaŵi), situated on the western shore of Lake Nyasa. By 1877 Karonga had become the stronghold of the notorious Arab slaver Mlozi. The modern town was founded, however, with the opening of a British trading post there in 1883. The British explorer Sir Harry Johnston (Johnston, Sir Harry Hamilton) took possession of the post in 1895 and ended the slave trade on the western shore. Karonga then grew as a commercial centre and entrepôt for local agricultural produce. The economy of the hinterland, based on the cotton and rice production along the lake and on coffee and livestock in the west, is augmented by subsistence fishing. Pop. (1998) 27,811.
