This rugged mountain consists of a group of summits of which the highest is Baxter Peak. Mount Katahdin is the northern terminus of the Appalachian National Scenic Trail, which extends southwestward to Georgia. The mountain's name is derived from an Abenaki Indian word meaning “main mountain.”
