Situated on the Irtysh River near its confluence with the Ob River, the city was formed in 1950 from the urban settlement of Khanty-Mansiysk (founded 1931) and the village of Samarovo. Woodworking and fish-canning industries are important. Teacher-training and medical colleges are in the city. Pop. (2006 est.) 59,593.
