词条 | Lisieux |
释义 | Lisieux France ![]() In Roman times the town was called Noviomagus Lexoviorum. An episcopal see from the 6th to the 18th century, Lisieux was a place of refuge for Henry II's exiled archbishop of Canterbury, Thomas Becket (Becket, Saint Thomas). Taken from the English and reunited to France in 1203, the town was a frequent subject of dispute during the Hundred Years' War (1337–1453) and later. The pilgrimage sites in Lisieux include the Chapelle du Carmel, where St. Theresa is buried, and the imposing Sainte-Thérèse Basilica, built in Romano-Byzantine style, begun in 1929 and consecrated in 1954. Formerly a leather and wool centre, the town now has plants manufacturing electronic equipment, wood products, pharmaceuticals, and processed food. It is also a local service and administrative centre. Pop. (1999) 23,136; (2005 est.) 23,100. |
