district and former mining settlement, northwestern Queensland, Australia, in the Selwyn Range. In 1954 a major deposit of uranium ore was discovered there near the Corella River. The town, named for the wife of Norman McConachy, who, with Clem Walton, discovered the ores, was built to house workers and their families; a processing plant was completed, and production begun in 1958. The closest railhead is Cloncurry (38 miles 【61 km】 east). When the original U.K. Atomic Energy Commission's contract was terminated in 1962, only a token maintenance force remained in residence. Mining was resumed in the 1970s but ceased in 1982. The following year, the contents of the town, including the buildings, were sold by public auction.
