One of North America's finest collections of Eskimo prints and carvings and Northwest Coast Indian art is preserved there; there is also an important collection of prints and drawings. The museum was established in 1847 as the Montreal Society of Artists; it became the Art Association of Montreal in 1860 and assumed its present name in 1948–49. It moved into its present home, a neoclassical building designed by Edward and W.S. Maxwell, in 1912. A new wing opened in 1976.
