词条 | Morant Bay |
释义 | Morant Bay Jamaica town, southeastern Jamaica, at the mouth of the Morant River, east-southeast of Kingston. It is a resort and a shipping point for bananas, coffee, pimiento, ginger, coconuts, copra, honey, and rum. Many of the early public buildings, including the Morant Bay Courthouse, were burned during severe riots of 1865 in which the chief magistrate of the parish and 18 other Europeans were killed. The ruthless suppression of the rioters under martial law led to indignation in England and the recall of the Jamaican governor, Edward John Eyre. In February 2007 the courthouse was again destroyed in a fire—but spared was the statue of Paul Bogle, leader of the 1865 rebellion, which still stands in front of the burnt-down walls. Pop. (1991) urban area, 9,185. |
