It comprises colleges of science and technology, humanities, business, and education and behavioral sciences. In addition to undergraduate studies the university offers 25 master's degree and professional programs. A joint doctoral degree is offered with the University of Kentucky (Kentucky, University of). Academic facilities include the Derrickson Agriculture Complex. Total enrollment is approximately 8,200.

The university was founded in 1922 as a state teachers college, Morehead State Normal School. The campus was established on the former site of a private denominational school that had opened in 1887. Morehead State was granted university standing in 1966.
