city, Ōsaka fu (urban prefecture), Honshu, Japan, on the southern bank of the Yodo River. A prosperous post town on the Ōsaka Highway during the Tokugawa period (1603–1867), it rapidly industrialized with the opening of a railway to Ōsaka in 1910. Manufactures include electrical machinery and appliances, textiles, and processed foods. The city is also a residential suburb of the Ōsaka-Kōbe metropolitan area. Pop. (2005) 147,465.
