Cloth weaving is the chief industry. Founded in 1681, it served as capital of the former princely state of Narsinghgarh. The town is adjacent to a lake backed by a hill ridge on which the fort and palace stand. There are a musical academy and a government college affiliated with Vikram University. Pop. (2001) 27,723.
