释义 | Necker, Suzanne French patroness original name Suzanne Curchod born May 1739, Crassier, Switz. died May 6, 1794, Beaulieu, near Lausanne ![]() At first she was engaged to the English historian Edward Gibbon (Gibbon, Edward), but his father broke off the match. In 1764 she married Necker, then a banker, and encouraged him in his political career. Her salon attracted such figures as the naturalist Georges Buffon (Buffon, Georges-Louis Leclerc, count de) and the authors Jean-François de La Harpe (La Harpe, Jean-François de) and Jean-François Marmontel (Marmontel, Jean-François). Madame Necker, who was the mother of Madame de Staël (Staël, Germaine de), also established a hospital in 1776. She wrote books and articles on literary and moral topics. |
