释义
Necker, Suzanne
French patroness
original name Suzanne Curchod
born May 1739, Crassier, Switz.
died May 6, 1794, Beaulieu, near Lausanne
Swiss hostess of a brilliant Parisian salon and the wife of Jacques Necker (Necker, Jacques), the finance minister under King Louis XVI of France.
At first she was engaged to the English historian Edward Gibbon (Gibbon, Edward), but his father broke off the match. In 1764 she married Necker, then a banker, and encouraged him in his political career. Her salon attracted such figures as the naturalist Georges Buffon (Buffon, Georges-Louis Leclerc, count de) and the authors Jean-François de La Harpe (La Harpe, Jean-François de) and Jean-François Marmontel (Marmontel, Jean-François). Madame Necker, who was the mother of Madame de Staël (Staël, Germaine de), also established a hospital in 1776. She wrote books and articles on literary and moral topics.
